The fall of the Maya civilization was caused by a series of events. I think that it started off with war among cities. This caused the soil to become insufficient to grow crops sufficiently. Also, war caused trade routes to change, and there were few safe trade routes. Less trade routes, and less crops caused starvation. This caused the Maya civilization to fall, and the people who did not die from hunger moved out of the Maya cities to different locations. This is not the case for all Maya cities. Some Maya cities were not very close to a water source which made life very difficult during the drought. Scientists believe that there was a drought for about 150 years in Mesoamerica. Therefore, the cities that weren't very close to water died from dehydration (lack of water). Some cities such as Palanque fought a lot with other cities. This may have caused there demise.

The Mayans may have believed that there wasn't going to be a meteor strike in the cities for all we know. They did have a very complicated calendar, and a priest may have misinterpreted the calendar and said that the world was going to end or there was going to be a forest fire. We don't know for sure, but archaeologists are working on figuring this puzzle out.
